Originally from the Jersey Shore, Carey started trash talking as a volunteer at the Watertown Recycling Center. He was later recruited by MassPIRG to help start the grassroots organization that brought full curbside recycling to Boston in 1994.

Since moving to Natick in 2003, Carey has been involved in many organizations focused on the environment: Natick Earth Day Committee; Renewable Natick; Natick Sustainablity Committee; and Natick Repair Cafe .
